Lammergeier vulture in the hover
The Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture, or Ossifrage (bone breaker) feeds on bone marrow. He turns up after the other scavengers have picked the bones clean and then flies high with the bones before dropping them onto rocks to smash them open.
In 455 BC, Aeschylus, the great playwriter known as the Father of Greek Tragedy, died in a most unexpected way. He was said to have been killed by a tortoise which was dropped by an eagle (possibly a Lammergeier) that had mistaken his head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell of the reptile.
